Airport: The word itself conjures a place where humankind’s desire to fly has come to fruition, allowing us to travel to distant vistas. With the advent of new age airports in India, the vision of an airport has moved from a basic functional area to a hub of social engagement and efficiency in a secure environment. The new airport could be defined as a “SEEC” environment; a Safe, Experiential, Efficient, and Consistent approach to our journey through this smart social hub. This has been exacerbated by the new and revamped airports truly promising a seamless experience—a glitzy high-end retail and F&B encounter underpinned by an extremely efficient operation with multiple layers of visible and invisible security.

India’s Facility Management (FM) sector has also kept pace with this new approach, with the “EEC” factors delivered by a high-tech, efficacy-focused, efficiency-driven team that endeavours to ensure guests have a smooth and memorable experience. While the front of the house experience receives a lot of focus, there is an equally large transformation happening with a focus on ESG, Health & Well Being, Risk Management, Asset Lifecycle Management, and Business Process Digitization. While the airport and aviation sectors were traditionally supervised through contract management, there has recently been a conscious effort by larger airport management companies to collaborate with recognised industry players, with a particular emphasis on “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” firms. This approach not only allows sensitive facilities such as airports to be managed by Indian companies but also promotes skilled job creation for the local populace, along with the constant upgradation of people, processes, and technology to keep pace with changing globally travelled guest expectations.

The integrated approach of facility management in the aviation sector has introduced smart, user-friendly systems that are pivotal in significantly reducing operating expenses while mitigating the sector’s carbon footprint and ensuring consistent operations despite the extensive protocols and blueprints of aviation operations. With a plethora of services, the IFM industry has a suite of solutions available, including the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud, big data and analytics, and a rejuvenated workforce eager to learn and grow. These disruptive technologies, streamlined services, and high-quality workforces boost airport operations and enhance their performance.
