Major factors behind the growth of Wine tourism in India

Wine industry in India has been on the rise since Chateau Indage started its operations in Narayangaon in 1982, rise of wonderful Indian wines that are world class along with growing wine culture as a result of expendable income as well as global tourism has resulted in growth of wine tourism in India.

How has the placement/ demand of wine in Hotels changed over time?
The taste palette as well as demand of Indian guests a decade ago, was directed to consumption of Whisky & beer while wine was considered a high society & to be savored only on occasions like toasting, some weddings. However with more marketing & growth of the Indian wines houses has resulted in wine being a drink of choice. Also over period hotel & wine manufacturers have conducted wine tasting/wine pairing sessions that has induced interest that wine can be paired with Indian food as well. Also wine has taken over as a status symbol as well of elegance.

Wine has become an essential part of the menu in today’s dining experience. What are the key factors in managing and serving the diners’ wine options?

Wine selection: Having a selection of Indian & International wines that are paired with the menu & compliment the food served at the restaurant.
Staff Education: Informed staff that can suggest wines based on the food ordered, & being able to describe the wine is important part of the process
Wine service ware & service style: Wine is considered to be consumed with panache, correct service ware i.e. wines glasses, goblets, champagne flutes, etc., as well as service style & maintaining temperature (white wine to be served at around 18 degree c, while red wine to be served at around 24-25 degree c.

According to you, how has the wine industry evolved over time in terms of supply as well as customer demand? How has it been impactful for your brand?

The demand for wines has gradually increased over time & has generated enough interest for more suppliers – both International & domestic to be a part of the supply chain. A lot of our guests also ask for Indian wine brands that have carved a niche for themselves. The immediate impact for the hotel industry is increase in revenue from wine sales as is considered a premium beverage.

How is wine at your brand (Hotel, restaurant or airline) playing an essential role in customer experience?

With the rise in wine connoisseurs, we have been planning & executing wine dinners, wine tasting events with wine sommeliers is a major draw. Wine is found its way as welcome amenity for high profile guests as well as in festive hampers in hotels.
