The future for women in hospitality reveals promising trends, increased opportunities, and enduring challenges. Female leaders are reshaping the industry with diverse perspectives, marking a pivotal shift towards inclusivity. While leadership roles become more accessible, persistent gender stereotypes necessitate focused efforts to promote equity.

Envisioning the future, gender diversity in hospitality advances through initiatives fostering mentorship and skill development. Technological strides, notably AI-driven tools, amplify this trajectory, creating a meritocratic space. The landscape promises empowerment, progress, and a genuine commitment to gender diversity and inclusion in the hospitality sector.

Co-founder; Chrome Asia Hospitality

In the dynamic realm of hospitality, women are increasingly making their mark, shaping the industry’s future landscape. As emerging trends redefine the sector, opportunities and challenges abound for women seeking to thrive in this traditionally male-dominated field.
One significant trend is the rising recognition of women’s leadership potential. Indeed, some of the most thriving hospitality brands in Mumbai, such as Masque, Magstreet Kitchen, Le15, La Folie, and Sassy Spoon, are all being led by women entrepreneurs who are not only acing the game but also reshaping the industry. These visionary women are breaking barriers, defying stereotypes, and setting new standards for excellence in hospitality.

However, challenges persist. Gender bias and stereotypes still linger, affecting hiring, promotion, and workplace culture. Achieving gender equality requires concerted efforts to address these biases and create inclusive environments where all voices are heard and valued.
Despite challenges, the future of women in hospitality is bright. Mentorship programs and networking initiatives provide vital support, while technology opens new avenues for innovation and growth. Women entrepreneurs are carving out their space, challenging the status quo, and driving positive change.

Co- founder at Gold by Ice cream works

Having said that, recently, we have seen more young women start food brands and make them very successful. Whether it be Isha Shetty of Vanille Miel or Pooja Dhingra of Le 15 Patisserie or myself with Ice Cream Works and Gold by ICW, I believe women bring a certain flare, innovation and attention to detail to the industry. We push the envelope and re-imagine not just the product, but the packaging, the stores etc.

Another thing women do differently is how they help their employees achieve work life balance (which is exceedingly hard in the industry). I also believe most women are able to create a more fun and connected work environment where the employees feel more connected to their colleagues and feel like they are part of a work family.

General Manager of Hyatt Regency Dharamshala Resort

The hospitality industry stands at the threshold of transformation, with women playing a pivotal role in shaping the industry’s trajectory like never before. In this ever-evolving industry, women are not just a part of the narrative—they’re shaping it. From the boardroom to the front lines, emerging trends indicate a rise in female entrepreneurship, diversity, and innovation.

However, as we envision the future, where gender diversity is celebrated, and inclusion is the norm. By fostering a culture of openness, respect, and empowerment, we can create an industry where every individual has the opportunity to thrive. Through advocacy, mentorship, and innovation, we can chart a course towards a future where every woman can thrive and inspire.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to inspiring inclusivity in every aspect of life. Today, and every day, let’s honour the achievements of women, amplify their voices and empower them to thrive, where diversity is celebrated, and where inclusivity is the foundation of progress. Together, let’s build a future where all individuals, regardless of gender, are valued, respected, and embraced for their unique contributions to society.

Utsa Majumder
General Manager of Hyatt Regency Dharamshala Resort

General Manager, Hyatt Centric Juhu Mumbai.

As a proud woman thriving in the dynamic hospitality industry, I affirm that it has consistently welcomed women into leadership roles with open arms. Throughout my extensive two-decade journey spanning various international brands, I’ve found that merit and diligence trump gender biases. My focus has always been on attitude, and I admit to having a soft spot when interviewing fellow women for specific roles.

In my role as the lady General Manager at Hyatt Centric Juhu Mumbai, I am deeply appreciative of the opportunities provided to women across all our hotels. Diversity stands as a cornerstone for Hyatt Hotels in South West Asia, with dedicated efforts to recruit and nurture women within our establishments. Working with a remarkably talented group of women at Hyatt Centric Juhu, I value the diverse perspectives they bring to the table. These women, spanning different age groups, are unapologetically forthright, offering unique viewpoints.

The future appears exceptionally promising for all of us, and I eagerly anticipate witnessing more women ascend to the position of General Managers in hotels soon.

General Manager of VARU By Atmosphere

In hospitality, we foster a people-centric culture, with a focus on the well-being of our team as much as the well-being of our guests. Women leaders display a natural knack for empathy and, therefore are more emotionally engaged with the team and guests alike. This has a positive effect on the way we treat our guests and colleagues. Women’s deep-rooted nature of compassion with the ability to understand and cater to the vital needs of guests and colleagues also enables us to be more effective at problem-solving in day-to-day situations. Taking a leaf out of their book, more and more leaders are focusing on this transformative leadership style. I believe, in creating a supportive work environment with equal opportunities for all colleagues, irrespective of gender. The first step to achieving gender diversity and inclusion leadership is to embrace a “Leader as a Leader” without being gender specific – so everyone can have limitless opportunities.

General Manager Kochi Marriott

In the current dynamic realm of hospitality, we witness a remarkable evolution in gender dynamics. At Marriott, and likewise at Kochi Marriott, we embrace this transformation wholeheartedly. Opportunities for women in hospitality are burgeoning, as we recognize and celebrate their unique perspectives and contributions. Our lady pioneers exemplify resilience and strategic prowess, setting new standards and inspiring future generations.

Nevertheless, challenges persist, particularly in balancing work and family commitments, especially with single parenting & the phase following childbirth for women. Acknowledging this, we advocate for flexible work schedules, ensuring that every individual, irrespective of gender, can thrive in their professional journey.

At Kochi Marriott, echoing the principles upheld by Marriott globally, we remain steadfast in our commitment to dismantling barriers and cultivating a culture of gender equality. Together, we pave the way for a future where women in hospitality not only succeed & thrive.

At Lyfe Hotels, in every corner of our establishment, you’ll find women leading the charge with passion and precision. From department heads to senior team members, women are driving our success story forward, infusing every aspect of our operations with their unique perspectives and skills.

As a promoter of the Lyfe Hospitality brand, I’ve personally witnessed the remarkable balancing act that women perform daily across all departments, leading with passion, dedication, and a keen eye for detail. From our room division manager overseeing 111 rooms to our training manager imparting knowledge to 200 employees, women are at the forefront of our operations. Our Thai restaurant chef, a woman leading a team of 20, exemplifies the multifaceted roles women undertake in our industry. Yet, I firmly believe that women’s unique perspectives, enriched natural leadership skills and nuanced approach be it in raising children or building a brand should be attributed to her every role. Pastry- DCDP, Novotel Juhu, Mumbai

I reckon, the future of women in hospitality is marked by emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges. At Novotel Juhu and Accor, we foster women empowerment and diversity with inclusivity. The kitchens are dominated by male colleagues ofocurse but there is a sense of belonging and unity. While strides have been made towards gender equality, challenges such as gender bias and unequal opportunities persist. However, there is growing recognition of the value of gender diversity and inclusion in driving innovation and enhancing guest experiences. Emerging trends include initiatives promoting gender equality, mentorship programs, and leadership development opportunities tailored to women. Opportunities for women in hospitality span various roles, from management to entrepreneurship. VITS Kamats Group

There was a  time when very few women were leading the key positions in the industry. But today, we see that many key positions are occupied by women.

I’m happy that even in our own company, positions like the head of p r and marketing, General manager finance and even the chair person of our board is held by  women.

Today, we see lot of women entrepreneurs in FnB sector emerging and doing successful businesses across the industry. Emotional intelligence plays a major role in exceeding the guest’s expectations and who better than the women in our industry to do it. The hospitality sector has welcomed women in key positions with open arms, and the women are making the most of it by giving their hundred percent and excelling in their respective roles.

Operations Head & Mixologist, Bayroute

As we contemplate the future of women in the dynamic worlds of hospitality, it is definitely boundless. Despite historical gender disparities, today’s landscape presents unparalleled opportunities for women to excel and lead with innovation and resilience.

In my role as Operations Head and a mixologist at Bayroute, I am acutely aware of the challenges that women face in these predominantly male-dominated industries. However, I am also fueled by the immense potential for change and progress that lies ahead of us. This industry thrives on diversity, and women bring unique perspectives, creativity, and expertise to the table. With a growing recognition of the value of gender diversity, there is a significant shift witnessed towards inclusivity and equality.

Undoubtedly, women have long been underrepresented in leadership positions in the hospitality sector, despite their invaluable contributions to guest experiences and operational excellence. But, it’s time to break through the glass ceiling and claim our rightful place at the forefront of this vibrant industry.

As a mixologist, I take pride in challenging stereotypes and surpassing expectations, demonstrating that gender is no obstacle to excellence behind the bar. Also, as a leader, I take it as my duty to cultivate a culture that empowers women to achieve their full potential, whether as chefs, managers, mixologists, or entrepreneurs. By breaking down barriers and promoting diversity, we are not only elevating the industry but also paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future, where every woman can flourish and leave her mark on the tapestry of Indian hospitality and F&B.

‘’While things are changing, women in the Indian hospitality industry face specific challenges, including traditional gender biases that linger in hiring and promotion practices. I also feel stereotypes often limit women to certain roles, hindering their access to leadership positions. The pervasive notion that certain jobs are more suitable for men creates a barrier for women aspiring to excel in diverse roles within the sector.Balancing work and family life remains a hurdle, as societal expectations and familial responsibilities may affect career progression for women in the industry.Overcoming these challenges requires a concerted effort from organizations to promote inclusivity, reshape cultural norms, and implement policies that foster a more equitable and supportive work environment for women in the hospitality sector.
