Small Steps, Big Impact: Our Journey to Eco-Friendly Hospitality
George Cooper
CEO & Founder, KK Collection, Sri Lanka
Environmentally friendly, Sustainability and Ecologically Sound. These are phrases we hear mentioned nearly every day; their impact is huge, and in some way ways rather daunting.
We are in the throes of becoming certified for sustainability, and it is only one part of what we are aiming to do to reduce our footprint on this planet.
What we must not lose sight of is the importance of the impact our hotels have on the local communities around them. Some 90% of our staff come from the neighbouring villages – I am the only non-Sri Lankan working in the hotels. We are providing a livelihood for many people, and it is not just our staff – the local carpenter, the three-wheeler driver, and so on.
Besides employment, it behooves us to set an example and to pass on the message about looking after the planet; they need to carry out the same practices in their homes – stop using plastic, recycling and so on.
Regardless of how small, every little step is a step in the right direction
“Our commitment to the planet & people. Sustainable hospitality in action.“
