#BeatPlasticPollution: Six Senses Vana’s approach towards a Plastic-Free Retreat
Once hailed as a revolutionary material, plastic has now become a global menace. It invades our oceans, contaminates our soil, and threatens countless species. We stand united on World Environment Day to #BeatPlasticPollution and forge a path to plastic-free future.
To combat this crisis, Six Senses Vana follows the 4R principles of proper waste management.
- Refuse: Six Senses Vana refuses to accept single-use plastic inside the retreat.
- Reduce: We are constantly making conscious choices to reduceour plastic consumption by using alternative products such as glass water bottles, cloth bags, reusable utensils, and other items that aren’t a threat to the environment. We have established an in-house water bottling system since its inception in 2014, enabling us to eliminate almost 100k plastic bottles a year.
- Recycling: Six Senses Vana recyclesthe minimum amount of plastic waste that we produce in order to promote responsible waste management practices. In addition, Six Senses Vana is currently launching a series of campaigns in order to sensitise local communities on how to properly sort and recycle plastic waste. In this way, we will prevent it from ending up in landfills or polluting our environment.
- Reuse: Six Senses Vana is committed to innovation and always looks for alternatives to plastic in its products. We focus on sustainable purchasing and pioneer biodegradable materials, such as compostable and biodegradable garbage bags; using bamboo as display sheets; upcycling paper from waste papers; using orange peels for scrub-making; and many more innovative packaging solutions. By adopting these sustainable alternatives, we reduce our reliance on traditional plastic and mitigate its damaging effects on the environment.
Following are just a few of the initiatives that we have in place:
- We provide our vendors with reusable containers to deliver milk to us
- Paper or fabric bags are used for gifting, retailing products, and medicines.
- Using reusable containers for vegetable transportation
- We refuse packaging or products made of single-use plastics
- Packaging for amenities is recyclable and reusable
- For uniform packaging, we use recyclable and biodegradable materials
Six Senses Vana is further focusing upon its second P i.e. Planet. Our engineering team is continuously improving sustainable ways to conserve energy and water in order to achieve maximum efficiency, while reducing carbon emissions by utilizing solar energy, heat machines, and energy-efficient chillers. This reduces approximately 750–850 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. We have a rainwater harvesting system in place and an efficient Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP), through which we recycle 100% of our grey water within the retreat.
A plastic-free world is gradually becoming a reality at Six Senses Vana by educating each stakeholder about the dangers of plastic pollution. This is an effort to motivate both guests and hosts as well as local communities to adopt eco-friendly habits and support initiatives that promote sustainable development.
This World Environment Day serves as a reminder that the fight against plastic pollution cannot be confined to one day; it requires ongoing commitment, and Six Senses Vana is firmly committed to this fight. It is only through the work we all do together that we will be able to shift societal norms, foster innovation, and build a future where plastic pollution is a thing of the past. To raise awareness of sustainable alternatives, let’s pledge today to refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle to make an impact. As a consequence, we will leave behind a legacy that will last for generations to come: a cleaner, healthier planet for the next generation. #BeatPlasticPollution

Assistant Director-Human Resource
Aloft Bengaluru Outer Ring Road
Aloft Bengaluru Outer Ring Road has been championing the cause of beating plastic at every step and corner. The hotel and its employees have stepped up at all avenues and occasions to contribute towards the initiative which was led by our General Manager, Ms. Sita Lekshmi. As we embark on this journey, there have been numerous initiatives across various quarters in the hotel. To achieve the plastic free mission, the hotel constituted a committee to brainstorm and discuss progression every fortnight, which acted as a stepping stone and strategy to identify major areas.
The foundation of going plastic free was initiated through installing and inaugurating an in-house water bottling recycling plant, where glass water bottles are being produced, thus eliminating the major chunk of plastic bottle usage from the hotel. On a regular day, 3000 glass bottles are recycled and produced for water consumption for guests every day and since then there has been complete eradication of plastic bottles, a major pollutant source.
The next major sector was removing the plastic usage from guest amenities. Amenities such as toiletries, oral care, beauty and hygiene products which had composition of plastic was removed and alternate such as miniature bottles of lotion, shampoo, wooden hair brush, wooden toothbrush were introduced, which also were an appealing and delightful product used as memories by our guest of their hotel stay. The reduction was almost 2000 plastic items reduction every week.
While everyone of us loves to sip our drinks, plastic straws have been polluting our oceans and land since ages, and a drive to replace the plastic straws to recyclable paper straws had huge yield reducing over 200 straws on everyday basis. The concept of wrapping raw food items using plastic sheets has been in practice since ages in our industry. Mindset and change was embraced and plastic sheets were replaced with bio-degradable sheets, thus reducing over 100 metres of plastic sheets on everyday basis. Laundry bags delivered to guest rooms for collecting used laundry were also replaced from plastic bags to bio-degradable bags.
The drive of the mission went to identifying of the smallest plastic use as well, like replacing plastic access and identity cards, recycling of papers and controlling tasks like lamination where plastics were being used.
The success of this drive pertains to the continuous efforts and while all associates understand this is not the end but a journey towards restoring our planet for a greener and better future.

Director Food & Beverage Service, Radisson Blu MBD Hotel
We at Radisson Blu MBD, Noida believe in the holistic approach towards sustainable development which has a profound impact on the environment all around us. Elimination of Plastic and No Single Use Plastic in our Hotel premises is our commitment and we have come a long way since we started this Journey.
As we all know that Plastic is non-biodegradable and can take hundreds of year to breakdown and as a result, plastic waste accumulates in landfills, oceans and disrupt the entire ecosystem.
We have taken steps which has replaced all “Single use Plastic” with bio degradable alternatives materials (Glass, Metal, Tins and Bamboo) which has helped us in lowering the adverse impact on our surroundings.
For example, initially our Guest rooms have total of 18 plus items with Plastic and at present we do not have any item with “No single Use Plastic” in our Guest Rooms. It is a continuous process where in we are looking at better alternatives. Our F&B operations have started to serve water in Glass Bottles, Stirrers has been replaced with wooden stirrers, Green meetings initiative wherein sustainable stationery (Bio-degradable pens with seeds, Note pads with reusable paper) is kept in our conference rooms to create awareness and eliminate plastic waste).
Process that we follow to ensure that we are contributing to no plastic pollution is as follows:
Identify and Build alternatives
We first identified and re looked in to our operations area wise and department wise and created a list of Items containing plastic. Based on the Master list for the Hotel, we started choosing products made from sustainable materials such as Glass, metal, bamboo or corn starch.
Engage with local Suppliers
We have collaborated with our local suppliers and ordering local and fresh produce. We are also ensuring that our suppliers follows the same and helps us in our commitment while delivering items to us.
Waste Management (Segregation and Recycle)
This part is very crucial for our commitment as proper Plastic waste segregation and recycling ensures that disposal is done correctly. We have been commended and awarded certification for No.1 in Swachata Ranking for Noida Region by Noida Authority for the upkeep and sanitization levels at the Hotel building.
We have a very strong and robust process where entire Plastic waste is segregated at the source and kept separately in bins for recycling pick up. For example, all our used water bottles which are coming out of the rooms are segregated and kept separately which in turn is picked up by a company who collects these used water bottles, shreds and use it for Roads construction and Fabric manufacturing purposes.
Support
We are Supporting Campaigns and Organisations that work towards reducing plastic pollutions. Clean up drives around our Hotel is done regularly
Educate
Educate our teams about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and create awareness through engagement activities like decoration from waste etc. Idea is to have participation from all and create awareness.

THE Park Hyderabad
Our organization has sworn to protect the environment and support the government by helping to slow down global warming as a responsible citizen of our country. In honor of Environment Day on June 5, we at The Park Hyderabad have started a few awareness programmers and advocated for them.
The three main problems are pollution, air quality, and noise, and by travelling in groups, we have made progress in reducing all three. In order to reduce unnecessary emissions, we have set up taxi and bus services for the personnel.
To minimize unnecessary electrical use, we made an effort to combine artificial lighting and natural lighting. We also advocate for healthy eating practices that don’t involve cooking, which supports the use of less LPG gas.
