June 2024, New Delhi: Andaz Delhi, Hyatt’s first luxury and lifestyle hotel in India, is marking this World Environment Day by highlighting its extensive sustainability initiatives. There’s a reason why Andaz Delhi has been awarded the prestigious LEED Gold Level Certification. Both Andaz Delhi and Hyatt Delhi Residences lead the way in sustainable hospitality with game-changing initiatives that blend eco-consciousness with guest comfort. These efforts underscore the hotel’s dedication to creating an eco-friendly environment through innovative strategies, steadfast commitments, and advanced techniques.
Over the past few years, Andaz Delhi has implemented numerous sustainability initiatives. Some of it’s notable projects towards controlling its carbon emission and water are:
- The installation of an on-site water plant, which enables the hotel to offer guests sparkling freshwater with zero carbon footprint.
- Additionally, the hotel operates an on-site, fully automated wet garbage composting machine. This machine transforms wet kitchen waste into dry compost within 24 hours, which is then used for the hotel’s landscaping needs.
- In a recent move towards a greater eco-friendly initiative, Andaz Delhi partnered with Enactus at Jesus & Mary College. Through this collaboration, the hotel supports Project Iffat, an initiative aimed at reducing soap waste. This project not only minimises waste but also creates employment opportunities for underprivileged women who reconstruct barely used soaps from the hotel. These recycled soaps are then sold at affordable prices in slums through the Enactus community.
- Andaz Delhi proudly holds a LEED Gold Level Certification for its environmentally conscious electricity usage. The hotel employs 2% Green Power from solar energy and 60% from hydro plants, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Furthermore, 98% of the hotel’s lighting is energy-efficient LED, enhancing its environmental performance.
- As a Zero Discharge building, Andaz Delhi recycles all wastewater generated on-site, reusing it for landscaping, cooling towers, and gardens. The hotel utilises highly efficient chiller plants with VFD control and Air Handling Units (AHU) that are also VFD-controlled, contributing to its low-energy footprint.
- The hotel’s rooms feature an in-room interface system that monitors and regulates electricity and air conditioning when the room is vacant, promoting efficient energy use. In line with its sustainability ethos, Andaz Delhi uses paraben-free wet amenities and non-plastic dry amenities in guest rooms.
The food philosophy at Andaz DelhI:
- AnnaMaya, Andaz Delhi’s modern food hall, is celebrated for its sustainable sourcing practices, focusing on artisanal, seasonal, and local products. Since its opening in 2016, AnnaMaya has encouraged guests to “Eat Mindfully, Shop Artisanal, and Raise Awareness.”
- Both, AnnaMaya and Soul Pantry are mindful eateries and offer plant based, plant focused delicacies
- Soul Pantry is also known as one of the kitchens in Delhi to offer millets and delicacies made with millets in its menu
- All the surplus food is donated with the help of Robin Hood Academy
- Plastic straws are eliminated and instead paper straws are used
To further support environmental conservation, Andaz Delhi has installed various rainwater collection tanks, harvesting pits, and trenches. These systems help prevent soil erosion and recycle collected rainwater for hotel use.
Each day, Andaz Delhi strives to enhance its environmental practices. These initiatives represent just a few steps in the hotel’s ongoing commitment to a greener, better tomorrow.
