Spread over an area 11 acres, with 129 guest rooms, and several amenities, Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort & Spa, requires a vast amount of resources and energy to function. With such a huge infrastructure, also comes vast amount of water & waste generation. Since the pre-commencement phase, we have worked on several aspects of making the resort an environmental sustainable tourist destination. During the project design & engineering stage, with the guidance of the consultant, we designed the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems like Chiller, Air Handling Units, Ceiling Suspended AHU’s, Treated Fresh Air, Exhaust, Pumps, Motors and more with technical focused research. The systems were chosen to reach its highest efficiency. Our Chiller has an incredible COP (Coefficient of Performance) rate of 0.6 value.
Sewage Treatment Plant
We have a massive waste management system in place to manage our waste recycling requirements. We hold 125KLD (Kilo Litre per Day) Sewage Treatment Plant, which reuses 100% recycled water for our 25000 Sq. ft landscape and lawns. We also have a third party power contract placed for energy conservation.
With the pre-installation work in process, we are scheduled to Install the IOT (Internet of Things) based on Online Continuous Monitoring System (OCMS) for the upcoming year 2023, for our Sewage Treatment Plant and Water Treatment Plant.
Ultraviolet Reverse Osmosis
Further, we have also scheduled to start installation of UV (Ultraviolet) treated RO (Reverse Osmosis) water to be served in Glass Bottles for room service & restaurants by end of this year. We intend to reduce the usage of single use 500ml plastic water bottles approximately by 36,000 bottles a Month. This will be live from 1st of July 2022.
Solar System
On the same lines of energy conservation, we are also one of few properties which is functioning on LED lighting. Moreover, we are also due to install 20,000 Litres Hot Water Solar System and A 300 KV Solar PV panels at Terrace, scheduled by 2023.
Residential Bath Amenities Programme
At Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort & Spa Mahabalipuram, we recognizes the importance of offering consistent products across each brand Furthermore, guests value high quality amenities as part of their overall experience. With the above being said, with this new programme that the resort is working on will help reduce the usage of plastic refills for the toiletries & wastage of partially used amenities by 100%
Sustainable Practices
During the lockdown & post lockdown, we have managed to continue our on-ground operations without any impact on our service by simple ideas and practices like:
1. Implementing regular periodic preventive maintenance of plant and machinery in guest rooms.
2. Avoiding any decision or practice leading to a major breakdown of plant, rather focusing more on maintaining it properly.
3. We have been operating chillers set at temperature based on the ambient temperature.
Based on the Business forecast, we spend 6% to 8% on repair & maintenance of the property and Up keep. For which we have annual maintenance Contracts in place for the critical engineering machineries – twice in a year preventive maintenance for kitchen exhaust ducts & hoods, quarterly inspection of all Fire Life Safety Systems, quarterly inspection for all mechanical systems, thrice a year servicing of Guest rooms and monthly PM for all electrical systems & mechanical systems.
Our Team at the resort are extremely motivated in executing dynamic sustainable practices from the starting of the project & still continue to do the same. Our principles to host our guests, come along with a pledge towards our local community, eco-system & sustainability of resources, at all costs.
